It is also used to prevent or treat hepatitis B virus infection. TDF inhibits HIV replication by blocking the viral reverse transcriptase enzyme, thereby preventing HIV from multiplying and infecting new cells. It is available as a tablet and oral solution.
Tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate has been associated with renal impairment, including Fanconi syndrome, in patients with advanced HIV disease and in patients receiving long-term therapy for chronic hepatitis B infection. Patients should be monitored regularly for signs and symptoms of renal impairment while taking tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate, including estimated creatinine clearance, urine protein levels, and serum phosphorus levels. If renal impairment occurs, dosage adjustment or discontinuation of tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate may be required
