Afrin should not be used for more than three days in a row because it can cause rebound congestion, also known as rhinitis medicamentosa. This occurs when the use of Afrin causes such an increase in nasal congestion that it becomes worse than before treatment was started. Rebound congestion is usually treated by stopping use of Afrin and using another type of decongestant medication or saline irrigation for several days until the symptoms improve.
Some people may experience adverse effects while using Afrin, including headache, dizziness, fast heart rate (tachycardia), dry mouth and throat irritation, nausea or vomiting. If any of these side effects occur, stop using Afrin and consult with your healthcare provider
