Analgesics
Analgesics are medications that relieve pain. They come in many different forms, including pills, liquids, and injections. Analgesics can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, and menstrual cramps.
There are many different types of analgesics available over the counter and by prescription. Some common over-the-counter analgesics include ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and aspirin. Prescription analgesics include opioids such as morphine and oxycodone; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as celecoxib and diclofenac sodium; topical treatments such as lidocaine cream or patches; tramadol hydrochloride tablets; fentanyl lozenges; and capsaicin cream.
Analgesics work by blocking the transmission of pain signals from the injured area to the brain. This reduces inflammation in the area and helps to relieve pain symptoms. Analgesic medications can be very effective at reducing pain levels for people who suffer from chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia. They can also help reduce postoperative discomfort following surgery
